Director Avery Here! Hello!
As a director, I pride myself on the empathy I carry throughout all the work I do. I ensure that with every production, there’s always a community, both on and off stage, and I feel that gives the story a strong heartbeat, something I feel is necessary in the work I do.
As a trained actor, my training informs a lot of the work I do as a director. I bring the experiences I have had, both positive and negative, into every room, cultivating a space built on vulnerability and collaboration. I understand actors and how they feel when they work, which allows me to connect and communicate with them on a deeper level, and allow layers of themselves to be exposed as we explore the story on a deeper level.
I have experience stage managing and being on a crew as well, so I’m able to communicate with people working behind the scenes, giving them a comfortable space to be able to communicate the needs they have to me. Being able to accessibly communicate with everyone in the room is something I really value, and I feel is important as a leader and director.
I always knew I wanted to do this from a young age, when I would go up to directors I had and give them ideas on how they could make it “look better” (I obviously do not do this anymore, but I always had the best intentions) I have a passion for exploring gender and identity in stories, even writing an AP Research paper about it senior year, and how you can explore and play with gender and sexuality within work without taking away from the message of the story. As a queer person, this is something that’s really important to me, and something I feel could change the landscape of theatre, allowing for more representation for gender queer artists. Gender is not something that is binary in our reality, so I believe it should be explored onstage as well, a space that has always been a reflection of our reality.
